    Thumbs up Sugar cane

    Hi peoples.
I am after a lump or two of sugar cane so I can grow a bit.
Is it the season to get some?
If so is there anyone who could send me a lump or two with the bits on it that are needed to propigate.

    Thanks in advance

It may not grow 10 foot tall and be productive, but ppl grow bananas here that actualy fruit.
The banana fruit only gets to about 4 inches long.

If you protect tropical stuff from the frost it will grow.

you probably could grow a bit of sugar cane but it might not produce much sugar. I think sugar beet suits the cooler climes better.

(yer could make booze outa either type of sugar)

With all the hot air at Al's place, the cane'll probably think it's in Cairns

May I suggest you find something else? I grew up in sugar cane country (I'm from Nambour in Queensland originally, and heading back to Brisbane this week for good ). Sugar cane has tiny hairs all over it that get into your skin if you brush against it and the hairs are extremely irritating and nigh impossible to get out.

No, I'm just fed up with Sydney. Mostly it's a case of elderly parent syndrome and making the most of life while it's still there.

Why? It isn't annoying enough to act as security, unless the burglars are Queenslanders and know what it is. That would be highly unusal, however, as the traffic in people is firmly running away the southern states northwards.

Al, I live in Bundaberg, where all the sugar cane grows. Mate, it wont grow in Melbourne. even if it can be persuaded to send out shoots there as soon as they peep through the ground in victoria they will know they have been had as soon as they see it and will drop back straight down again. sugar cane only grows oin gods own country and thats queensland.
But, if you are determined to try, as you know, im coming to melbourne on thursday, i will try and get you a piece (cane that is), if i can get any of my cane-cocky friends to hand one over without laughing too much and if quarantine regulations permit it
