Exterior finish
Hi I have been working on a large jarrah block that will become a bench for out side. I have been wondering what to finish it with. The peace of wood would have to be 100 years old. It came from an old steem train over head tank stand. The pepole I am doing the bench for would like it as low mantenis as posibale. I have been cleaning it up for them just to get rid of the splinters and I will seel it up with a finish . Im just not shore about out side finishes. I have been thiking of oiling it and then exterior estipol. Will this work or is there some thing better? I have been reading some of the other posts and read about automotive laquer. would this be sutibal for a project like this? It is in a lot of sun and wether.
Any help would be greate. Thanks Gazza

here is a thread i started on the same line.
Some other research and emails to feast Watson came up with these options.

This is an answer to the following email
I am making some outdoor bench seats with natural edges out of Blackwood and wattle.
There are some edges - splinters- that cant be sanded out so i require a cover that will -
protect for outside use, under pergola, veranda etc.
seal over these edges, plasticy coating
have movement for cracks etc that move in timber.
last for 2 or 3 years at least
when recoating is required no need to strip to bare timber and start again.
What are you recomendations for this project. ie spr varnish or marine varnish etc

Hope these help.regards

Organoil exterior oils are pretty good. I know that at least one of their oils will help prevent splitting and even go so far as to closing up cracks, hairline ones not gaping crevasses.

Thanks for that. I'v been thinking I have got a lot of interior polyurethane. Could I use some of that for several coats and then use a exterior one like the one you have suggestion? All so is the wattle brand exterior polyurethane any good as I live in the far west of S.A. and it is just easier to get hold of it
Thanks Gazza
