Default I should move my finger

Hi all, the other day I was drilling a 1/4" hole thru a block of wood using the cordless drill, nothing too radical, the block (pine) is 86x43x200 long, I had the block sitting on a noggin and I was holding the block with my left hand, I was drilling the hole at an angle starting low at the btm edge and exiting at about a bit over halfway, as I'm drilling I'm thinking I probably should move my finger/s that was hanging over the other side of the block cos the drill will exit and it might get my finger, while I'm thinking all this the drill exited and got my finger, dang!!! tooo slow, just a couple of small nicks out of the end of the finger just under the nail, no blood no bandaid, not even worth a pic, just a nuisance,

Is it just me or do others do this sort of thing? My brain was occupied with the drilling and what might happen when the drill exits, I probably only needed a couple of extra seconds to move the finger and all would have been good, but

Same here, Done it, drilled it, got the bandaid to prove it.
A screwdriver thru the palm is worse. Was trying to undo rusted screw that was hold 2 pipes together. Pressed to hard, slipped and went thru palm with the driver.

When we built our first house just after our first child was born, had to build a fence so did a woven rail fence (something different), anyway had arm wrapped around a rail while I drilled the bolt hole, said to the wife, bloody ants biting me,......you guessed it...drill straight into arm about 5mm, no real drama......taught me a big lesson though

I did it about 19 years ago, you can rest assured that you will only do it once. I had a young bloke working with me that drilled a 7/64 hole right throught the tip of his finger, you could see the spot under the nail where it stopped. I guess he never did it again either.

I'm sure it's the body's sixth-sense kicking in when it forsees danger before the eyes and brain do.

I've done similar soooooo many times. If I've paid attention to my tingling "Spidey-sense" and moved out of danger, very quickly I was thankful I did as the sharp thing whizzed through where the soft squishy thing used to be. If I've ignored it, it's usually resulted in a torrent of multisyllabic profanities garnished with a few lashings of blood and/or bruises.

It's a bit Zen, but I've learned to listen to my body...most of the time

Haven't done it myself as yet !!! ( Touch wood ), Had a few close calls over the years!!
Do know of a capenter friend years ago, who was drilling an 1/8" hole through some timber in his workshop, when he was interrupted by a salesman,- result a nice neat hole through his left thumb nail, & thumb, plus some very descriptive words to the salesman !!
Another young guy, ( apprentice First Fix carpenter at the time ), using a Paslobe Nailing Gun, made a miscur with one nail, - speared through the right knuckle, ( he's a lefty by luck ), then," crashed," into a vehicle driving down the street 20 metres away !!! He was off-work for several weeks, with a heavily-bandaged right, "paw. " .
Yes, he's still got all his fingers intact, and as far as I know he's never had another go,- always keeps his right hand well clear of where he is nailing !!!!!

Then there was the local Electrical guy, who was having problems removing an old tellie antenna, which was extra-well attached to an old chimney,- He finally got it off, but in doing so, lost his footing on the customer's roof, crashed over the side, antenna, & all, - Luckily there was a kid's trampoline there, right underneath,- Unluckily he somehow managed to," spear," one palm, & one foot with the pointy bits of the old antenna !!!
Hhe was well reminded about THAT for a long time afterwards !!!

Took small amounts of skin off with drill several times over the years no biggy...

Got myself with a 4" grinder with thin cutting blade near the thumb last week (only just nicked myself, probably 2mm deep)...

But probably the best one was back at college about 30 years ago... was learning to oxy weld and had the dark green glasses on and went to reach for a new filler rod... well all fine and well except I forgot to move the other hand that was holding the torch... anyone smell burning flesh?

Blistered up the skin in the webbing between thumb and forefinger to the size of about a 20 cent piece.

I've seen an old chippy assembling window frames drill straight through his forefinger left hand. He'd done the job for years and was more upset by trying to work out how he'd been so stupid than the injury.
    cheers,
    Jim
