    Default WA Blackbutt bonanza

Around early November last year a mini tornado decide it would hit the ground and go for a rip for about 50km across the back of town. So it was into the truck and follow the trail of destruction. Knowing alot of the farmers in the area was a real plus and offering to help clean up in exchange for the logs was a real bonus to them. After about a month of piling up hundreds of tonnes of Marri logs I was starting to get sick of the sight of them, but hey got enough now for two years for nothin but a bit of elbow grease and a couple of hundred litres of diesel. But then i come across a farm where it had travelled along a creek line and cannoned down a heap of blackbutt, and not little ones either. So after about two weeksof screamin stihls and bustleing bobcats I end up with about 80 tonne of beautiful first grade blackbutt. This stuff is becoming so hard to get your hands on and is our most valuable timber, so what to do with it? Ill let the photos tell the story

Sharing requires two people in the same place. One with timber and the other with a cheque book. Gotta get lucky sometimes

Yeah, I can see a lot of work in just getting to that point in the process.

Thanks for posting the pics, especially this one.

NICE!!! I like your big bandsaw, that will have some mizer owners looking green!!!
I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

The big bandsaw isnt mine. I took the log up to John Knapton at West Coast timbers in Myalup, *(in between Bunbury and Mandurah), its his big Forester bandsaw. It slabs out to about 1500 wide and isnt that expensive for what you get back. Compared to a chainsaw slabber you probably get back one extra slab. The guy operating the mill is Bob, the bandsaw guru I have mentioned before. He comes over for one month a year from QLD so its good to catch up with him and talk about blade set up and get some wicked timber back while were at it. The woodmizer and twin edger in the pics are mine.

Hmm...? Twice what I charge. Might have to review my prices. On second thoughts I don't think too many around here would pay that. Pity

    Very tidy setup.

    cheers

Jesus h christ, He would want to only be charging for the time slicing not the time he stands around with his thumb up his ring. Makes me think that the 75 an hour I charge for lathe and mill work is ripping myself off. My costs would be as high or higher than what he has running that and I would say my outlay on machinery would be on par or greater!!!! well I dont have a loader but otherwise.... that is just BS.

Ive always wondered what was in that West Coast Timbers shed in Myalup...now I know, a bloody big bandsaw!!!
Geez $400/hr is a bit exxy but isnt it...must cut a fair bit/hr
Pity he cant cut over 2m width, or Id send him up some nice big jarrah burls to play with, since theyz too big for me to cut!!!
Keep ya wood as long as u can...as long as u can!!!
