Coupla medium size pines

The riding school where SWMBO rides had a couple of medium size pines taken down.

The smaller one is about 900 mm diam at the base, the other one (stump shown) is about 1100 mm.






The scraggly looking smaller pieces are going to be used for cross country horse jumps. All the owners want is full width slab for a long outdoor table and the timber for the table legs and a couple of benches, and I can have the rest.

I'm not a big fan of radiata (wood also looks a bit red to be radiata to me) so I was thinking of cutting it into beams 200 x 200 and 250 and 300 x 75?
The trees also only appear to be ~35 years old - seems like they must like the horse poo.

Have only ever milled a couple of small ones before, thoughts, suggestions?

They look a little like the pinasta ones I did for a customer recently. Bark is already falling off them, just the same. Think its just the hot summer and drop in water table that is killing them all. Look out for small pin hole borer that gets into the trunks as they are dying off. I've got some logs in the yard to do but it is destined for pallet bearers I think but may do some sleepers out of them.. Have fun moving your big posts!

just remember it's only the outer sapwood that takes the cca treatment if you are going to do sleepers

dont know weather is radiata bark dosent quite look rite, should make some nice timber whatever you decide to do with it.

Nope, not Radiata or slash, but nice logs all the same.

I was under the impression treating hardwoods was an envelope treatment, but softwoods permeated the entire timber???

I believe the treatment for pine is right through, they put it in a decent chamber, reduce the pressure and inject the treatment into the chamber thus it being sucked into the timber. What are did the pines come from? Very similar to the ones I did over the weekend.

They came from and are still at a riding school in Waneroo.

Looks very similar to 'stone pine' - think it may also be called scots pine as mentioned above. Has a fruity odour and very distinctive red tinge in the heartwood. Pretty timber. Cut several logs up little over a month ago - most similar size to your pics.

Knots are particularly hard ie. the blades on my Lucas got chipped pretty bad (considering blackwood doesn't hurt them at all)
