    Default Post and rail fence.

Hello . i am looking to make a post and rail fence for my garden. it will be a considerable length . How do i cut the mortises in the fence posts?? they are 100 x 200mm and Hardwood.

What is an easy way to be able to do it as there will be many posts to be done.

Attached is a picture of what i am talking about.

Will the mortices be through mortices (except on end/corner posts) or do you just want to check the rails in some 50mm or so?

For the latter I'd simply use a spade bit in a good electric drill and clean 'em up with a hammer 'n chisel. You could make a template and use a router, but IMHO it's no quicker and you still need to clean up the corners.

Come to think of it, that's how I'd do it for through mortices, too...
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

As Skew says. Or a chisel or chain mortice machine or if you're any good a chainsaw or a good old hammer and chisel

Swiftden, the last time I made m&t rails (for a deck) I started off carefully setting a jig around the post and cutting the bulk of the slot with a router. After the first few posts I was cutting them virtually freehand and the work went very quickly. A quick squaring up of the corners and everything was a neat fit.
