    Default Hardwood and borers

    All,

Took delivery of some hardwood courtesy of Studley (thanks!). However some of the wood shows evidence of borer. My question is: does anyone know if the kiln drying process kills borer? If not, I guess I'll have to get rid of the pieces that show borer.

    Regards,
    Mike.

    Cool

I don`t know about kiln drying but i have put timber in the microwave and that seems to fix the borer problem

    What specie is it?

Kiln drying will terminate most borers. However reinfestation can occur if there are borers living in the storage are of the KD material.

Most lyctus suseptable species get treated prior to drying.
    Hooroo.

    Default Hardwood and borers

Has anybody used the freezer method on small bits of timber? I've been told that its another method of killing off borers. I don't know how effective this would be. I was told that customs used this method for treating any timber that people tried to bring into the country.
    Dave,
hug the tree before you start the chainsaw.

MMmm, unless there is fresh evidence(little fresh piles of sawdust is one, there's an actual technical name for the scat, but can't recall it ATM), there would be little to no possibilty of live borers, as the ones that cause most holes are present in the tree, before or straight after felling, wouldn't survive the ensuing conditions and treatment.
Having said that the euro borer is the one most tales of terror are told about, and that is quite uncommon unless imported antique furniture has been around. The lyctid beetle that Trev refers to are only interested in starch laden sapwood of certain species, and rest assured that any timber company of any repute does treat as a matter of course any timber that may even be remotely susceptible.
I reckon damage from borers is ovestated anyhow, termites now they scare me
