Backing material for wall tiles

Hi,

Over the weekend i had to remove some tiles in the kitchen to fix a leak in the pipe behind the taps. Turns out that there was pin hole size leak in the hot water pipe. I was wondering if it would be ok to use a piece of cement sheeting (eve lining) to replace the old stuff that came off and re-tile over the top of that. I am looking at replacing the kitchen next year some time, so this is just a temporary measure.

I'm in a similar situation, the kitchen is going to be gutted in a couple of years time. I used cement sheet similar to eve lining as the backing of a tiled splashback behind the stove and bench. It seems to be wearing well, it's not like it's a high traffic area...

It should be OK for a small area. The reason for using Villaboard instead of normal fibro cement sheet as it tends to grow and starts to bow out from the wall over a large area such as a bathroom. That tends to happen over a period of about 10 years.
