Hi. We have a friend who has recently bought a house and some of the plumbing looks questionable both in terms of legality and quality.

The first thing we noticed was that the main water supply line (which goes under the slab towards the back of the house) appears to be abandoned and a new line put in. Presumably the original one had a problem, perhaps because the concrete floor has been modified quite a bit and maybe the old line was damaged somehow. The new line is black polythene pipe and is buried about 30cm deep alongside the house. Its attached to short copper pipes at either end with compression fittings. The short copper pipes reconnect to the old line near the meter at the front, and near a tap at the rear.

Is this legal? Is it advisable even if legal ? I think of this as something one would only do temporarily - although the polythene pipe is quite sturdy I thought everything had to be copper.

It also makes me wonder, why are pipes buried under the slab anyway ?

The house is in NSW.
