Going crazy with spray paint failure
I have a pair of hoops from an Aussie drum kit, 1965. Black, chipped. I vote to respray. Since the inlay (drum wrap inlay - like laminex) comes off as soon as I start, I decide to strip the hoops, not simply mask the inlay and spray. No matter what I do now, the top coat will not dry. I don't know if this is because I used black water based stain first; or if there is residue I can't see - I don't want to sand these too much. I'm going crazy. I have heard that a thin coat of shellac is good for 'isolating' finish coats on wood. But what will I prime with? The only spray primer I could get at pathetic Bunnings was water based. It's long gone now; but something is stopping the paint from drying, that's for sure. Any advice much appreciated.
