Holes in timber.
Heya guys,
Is there a formula for what vertical loads can be placed on certain thicknesses and lengths ( bowing ) of general hardwood before failure?
Also if I'm correct in my thinking that when loads are applied to timber most of the load stress goes to the outside of the material? Ie if drilling holes it's better to drill in the centre of the timber? If a hole was a third the width how much strength does this take from the material?
I'm talking all vertical loads here end grain to end grain.
