A reservoir just outside Armidale was a pleasant excursion that we made in 2004 and a photograph was taken of the water although there were no anglers present. In 6 weeks of touring Australia I have seen many anglers on the shorelines or departing from harbours but never in the pastime of what we in the UK call corse fishing. Do anglers fish lakes and riverbanks in Oz?
Anyway we had a wet day yesterday and my new roof installed by the builders leaked like a seive, so it looks if I am going to go up there and put there job right. In the meantime I hope Armidale pleases.

Is that Malpas Dam.

I don't know if there is any fish in Malpas Dam but fishing on dams in Australia is big business but more on the larger dams in the Northwest like Keepit Dam south of Tamworth and Copeton west of Inverell.

Next time you're this way John we'll have to show you Lake Bullen Merri - trout and Salmon or Lake Purrumbete - trout to name just a couple of local lakes.
Or the Curdies and Hopkins Rivers - Bream, Mulloway etc in the lower stretches and trout etc upstream.
Lot of Big redfin (English Perch) in a large dam in the creek just down stream of the Scout Camp.
There'd have to be some good yabblies (freshwater lobster) in our creek as well as eels and redfin. Probably native blackfish in it too!

Hi Bazza.
I have put a title of Dumaresq Dam Park on the photograph I used, I recall leaving Armidale at the top NW corner of town and then turning Right (east) and followed an old railroad track for some distance.

Woody I am just thinking that a lot of the difference between fishers here and in England is all to do with the environment. Our seas are calm enough and we have lots of coastline and we are likely short on rivers and lakes compared to England. Of course most of the population lives close to the sea too.

I do know that there are places here where they fish rivers for trout and the like but in South Australia we do most of our fishing in the sea which is sensible considering the rivers we have here.

Thanks Ian and Studley. The club site looks interesting, whizh I was young again for once.
Remembering the river currents I observed when touring up the east coast it would not be the same sort of angling as here in the UK, I reckon you would need 1cwt to hold a line to the bottom.

I know about SAFWAA because I used to be a member, I also ended up on the commitee for a few years.

the club stock private dams with thousands of fish, trout, rainbow & brown, murray cod, callop and a few others from memory. one species per dam from memory.

Members could then fish these dams. there where and still are limits to how many people per day can fish a dam and bag sizes ect.

I fondley remember catching a 6+ pound rainbow trout on a 14' pole in a dam the club had stocked a few years earlier. also learning to fly fish on the same dam. I must admit that I suck at fly fishing.

they had days where we had peged events (fishing comps where you get a spot to fish from a number out the bag sort of thing).
one day there was a comp in the torrens in the middle of Adelaide, that day the bloke next to me caught a brown trout right in front of the festival theatre. true story. but most of the fish were bloody carp.

I used to have thousand' of dollars worth of course fishing gear until it all got stolen:mad: I have never bothered replacing it and now hardly ever go fishing.
