Default Hello, folks, new carver here!

I am a self-educated carver. I have carved ships and airplanes our of solid pine, but I just fell in love with airplanes. So far I carved a Cessna 120, a Brewster Buffalo, and using that Brewster buffalo as a yardstick, I am carving planes on such a scale as to be consistent with that model. I'm working on a new model, a B-25 Mitchel bomber, that has a wingspan of two feet.

I find I'm a bit crude when it comes to painting, especially fine decal work. Does anyone have a good recipe for this? I'm currently trying to come up with a formula to equate the circumference of a circle to a ray between the points of a five-pointed star. I'd like to use a compass to etch the circle, then use a formula such that each star point is 72 degrees from the next. Any ideas?

welcome to the forum. when painting in detail work I find that using one of the fingers as a steady keeps me from moving too much. It is more like your sign painters do using a stick as a steady. That's why they stay in the line.

what about finding a picture of a 5 pointed star on the web and printing it to a scale you like then putting it over the plane and mark the points with a pin, Then you can work out the rest from there.
I get that you'd like to know something like if I use 1 inch radius, extending to say 1.25 inch will give you 5 points on the edge instead of the 6 it would give. Its a nice puzzle and I'll now need to go work it out. I want to know as well now.

OK Found out how to do it with just a compass.
