Start of Jeffwood thicknesser restoration
I have started the strip down. I will be soda blasting first than painting. any rusted parts will be getting the molasses treatment.
Replace bearings, get motor serviced then put it back together.
This has a square head. Does anyone know if I can buy a round head for this or do I need to machine a shaft to suit a spiral head?
Regards
Ross

Jeffwood Thicknesser after Soda blasting
I Soda blasted thicknesser today. The bed and drive rollers will go into molasses to get rid of the rust. Everything needs to be washed down then primed and painted. I need to replace a couple of bushes and make a new gear for one of the drive rollers. Then put it back together. Here it is after Soda Blasting

Hi Ross, many years ago I had a friend make me up a 3 bladed round cutter-head for my Jeffwood thicknesser, works well but I would shudder to think what it would cost me now to make up.
I would be looking to the US for a spiral insert head, they are a nice thing.
Now that you have taken the cutter-head out of the machine, do a drawing of all the crucial measurements, journal and bearing size, cutter-head diameter etc ...
Send this detailed drawing of to the companies in the US that specialize in custom making these heads such as ::: Byrd Tool Corp ::: etc.. and ask for a quote.
I would not bother to go through any one in Australia, they will only put a mark up on the item, the Australian dollar is still good and I think you will be pleasantly surprised with the pricing in the US compared to how much the same item will cost over here.
Melbourne Matty.

Hi Ross,
Looking good so far, and based on your trade I think I will be adding this to my watch list, sounds exciting.
Cheers,

Now who's ruining our economy?
Does it have blades? Lightning won't strike you if you do use a square head ... but I wouldn't stick my hand in there.
My Cooksley has a 50cm square head. With a spiral head it would be unbelievable ... one day ... one day ...
