    Default Buying a Used Router

Tomorrow I'm going to look at a slightly used router with electronic speed control.

What sort of things should I look at when examining the router to locate any possible problems and what questions should I ask the owner?

    Thanks!

Gassito,do you know the brand, model, age and of course the price.
That would make it easier for us to make a comment.

    It's a Makita 3612C.

Not sure about the price yet.

First up: Power lead - is it in a sound condition without nicks and cuts. If you can see copper, or the colored insulation of the wires the lead needs replacing before use. Check that the plug is sound. Unless the tool is marked as double insulated there must be a connected earth pin.
If the above checks out, how does the switch operate - is it positive in both the on and off positions. If there is a speed control does it move freely but not so freely that it is likely to change speed when the motor is running.

Another thing I would enquire about are tool/s to change the bit. Generally one or two open ended spanners are required. If there is no shaft lock make sure the router comes with the correct spanner to hold the shaft.

Fence - does the tool come with a fence so you can route grooves?

If it is a plunge router is the action both ways smooth, and does it lock in a plunged position.

Hope this helps. There are other things to look at like the collet/s and run out but this should get you started.

No matter, at least you and others know what to look out for in the future.
