The cost of .404 Skip tooth chain 27RX
HI i bought a 100 foot roll of 27RX which is 5 skip (i think) and when i went to pick it up i nearly fell over .
$990 for the roll. I didnt realise that it was so expensive compared to the other chains i buy - Normal chain for my saw is $1 per inch of bar + $15 so i was astounded when it was $9.90 per foot on the roll. Even my mate (who owns the shop) was surprised at the price. - maybe not a mate any more
What else i found out is
27R is ripping chain
27RA, normal skip tooth has 3 plates between teeth (probably 1 skip but all teeth are evenly spaced
27RX, extended skip tooth has 2 cutters together then a long space (about a foot almost) before the next set of cutters - they are right left right left as well.
Here is the box and the card on sharpening
What do you others pay.
Cheersregards
David

Geeze I thought you were getting enough to make a slabber chain not a whole roll, could have told you that it'd be dear as poison, we normally pay about $800 a roll down at the mill I think from memory but then again we normally order a fair bit of it as we do go thru abit. Think we get 8 chains for the Lucas slabber out of one roll or if for the bigger slabber 6 or 7 chains.
Out of interest how much did you end up paying for the 27RA?Cheers

$220 for 2 27RA chains (this was not from my mate - this was a different shop)
I had 2 27RX made up to suit the slabber 190 links and the rest is still in the roll. My big bar (44inches 129 links) for the 660 uses it as well so i have enough to see me till retirement.
He is a good mate and he said if anyone wants some he will call me and buy it back - but i am the first in Ballarat to purchase it in 10 years from the biggest dealer here.
Cheersregards
David

I was logging on to post this same question when I saw this thread. I've just recieved a catalogue from the people I normally buy through and was astounded by the price rise-they have 27RX listed at $1040 for 100 ft, and 27RA for $730/100ft or $228 for 25ft.
(25 ft is reallyonly one loop for a Lucas Slabber so I'd have to go the longer roll).
Does anyone use other types of chain, as long as its 404, .063 guage its possible to grind the cutters off to make the skip and file back to 10 degrees is it not?
Does anyone use this method and have a preferance for brand. Carlton chain, in my opinion has tougher cutters therfore less sharpening (on the CS anyway) than the Oregan.

Forum member sawchain sells high quality GB chain for about half that rate and IMHO it's betterer than the Oregon stuff too.

i buy standard .404 chain and cut my slabber chains to the amount of skip i need dependign on what i am cutting.
i normaly use the chain as is for teh first cut as new chain cuts so good.
then i take it to the chain vice. i grind off 3 teath and leve 2, remove 3, leave 2 and so on. i then gut teh ramining depth gauges down quite severly (with the angle grinder) almot half way. i then take the top plate angel back to 15*. this is what i have found to be the best cuttign chain.
to give you an idea we were slabbing a mango log 1.2m diamiter the otehr week. with 2 of us pushing as hard as we could we could not bog the motor down (it is 27hp after all) and teh biggest slab 1.2m x 3.5m x 1m took 58 seconds to cut.
when the depth gauges are cut down that far you get litle lumps of wood not chips or dust.
i think i paid $80 for my last chain. 191 links

The Oregon chain is a bit on the dear side compared to Carlton, A pity that none of the Carlton extended skip is being bought in by the importer although it is manufactured.
My price: Oregon 27RA-25' $202, 27RA-100' $650, 27RX-100' $870
Carlton B3EP-100' SC skip or B3LM-100 chisel 404x63 $450, these have a 30o top plate.
Single loops Carlton.404 50c / DL
I use the Carlton semi chisel either std sequence with 3 or 5 cutters removed after a pair, or skip sequence with 1 or 3 cutters removed after a pair - depending on the width of timber being slabbed.

I bought a roll about 10 Weeks ago and after chasing deallers and prices ended up ringing LUCAS and found they have the cheapest price.. almost positive I paid about $780 for 100ft roll and at 190 links you get 7 full chains so I remember thinking $100ish a chain - that's not too bad I suppose..
