Help sourcing timber

Hi, we are attempting to restore an old sideboard. The top was water damaged and warped.
We are looking for a large piece of timber.. 242.5cm x 50.7cm x 2cm thick..
Not too fussed about the type, as we can stain to match..
Would like to know where we can source? We are in Melbourne, VIC.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi RetroAnge and welcome to the fun house.

If you can use just about anything, maybe you would be best to use Tasmanian Oak. It's a hard wood and stains OK (depending on the stain and the stainer) A piece of timber 507mm (50.7cm) wide would probably not be a great idea and would also be hard to find. At that width, it would be prone to movement and could twist once you've finished preparing it and have it securely mounted on the sideboard. I would think several smaller boards joined together would be a safer bet. Say, 3 x 180mm or 190mm, then the edge trimmed to fit the sideboard. Tas Oak you can buy from most timber/hardware stores, but do try to avoid "The Big Green Shed"
