    Default African Ash Finish

Excuse the bit of a RANT

13 yrs ago my youngest son for his school project made a real nice African Ash unit most panels are laminated MDF edges draw and frame real wood, for himself. It was never finished as in he never sealed it. Not cheap timber or the laminations well over $350 closer to $500

It has sat in a room down at MiL's for some years now, recent events mean its ours now. So went down to measure up etc Some bastwerd has used water based lacquer on it (no one will own up who this includes SiL & partner).

The timber had a natural white look even after 13 yrs maybe just a tad of yellowing but not looking like MDF after lacquer has been used.

So hand sanding is the only way, as African Ash is very chippy so far one shelf and the top done ( it comes off), almost back to original as its seems just one coat has been done not to thick or thin.

I/we want to now after sanding use a finish to retain as much as possible the whiteish look. Options of what I have in stock are Wipe On Poly, Nitro Lacquer Satin Timberlac to spray, Danish Oil.

I am up for suggestions if anyone has used other finishes or had experience with any of the above on African Ash.

STRANGELY ENOUGH the most 'colourless' finish I have ever used is water based clear. I think it is Cabots but I'll check tomorrow when I don't have to battle the mozzies for possession of the shed!

Mozzies in the shed not good sign could it be from the pond behind.

Not sure if water based is the way to go I found fluid stains (cups, cans) on one shelf almost sanded out without going through the verneer.
