Hi Folks. My names Chris and i stumbled across this forum recently and found it to be very informative. Around 6 months ago I bought my first home, a Western Red Cedar, and i've been doing a few things here and there to fix it up, mostly correcting mistakes from the previous owners. I am definately no expert, i think i even flunked year 7 wood working class, but i am keen to learn have a fair idea of whats what without thinking i know it all...

Yeah a bit of light pruning here and there, lol.

I don't know what the previous owners were thinking but for a western red cedar with brown "paint" on it, not actually a stain but some type of covering, they have painted all the window sills, door jams, guttering, decking and garage a similar shade of brown. It was gross. Some people have no idea, really!
Ive just been painting all the brown areas a lightish green and now plan on sanding all the weather boards to remove the paint and then putting a nice stain on it. Can anyone tell me what they could have possibly used on the red cedar weatherboards that it either a paint or a laquer? It's all peeled off like a snake skin and looks horrible.

G'day RMcR ! I didn't think they painted WRC. Doesn't it have some sort of oil in it? Anyway I'm prolly less of an expert than you.

Would love to see pics of your tree house though.

Yeah well that's just it. I've stained a few houses in my time. Never heard of painting a western red cedar either but it appears to have been done on mine. Possibly by the same people who painted everything brown.

So a 'western red cedar' is actually a type of house and not just a tree? Have you got a picture?

Probably due to the oil in the timber, Paint won't stick to it very well. Might make it easier for you to remove the old "paint" though. Good luck with it.

Yes dude. I live in a house lol. Not a tree. Although the house did come with it's own tree house in the back yard

Some very long hours sanding and scraping is ahead of you. I guess you already know that.

Yep sure do lol. The parts i can scrape will be easy it's the sanding i'm not looking forward too. I'm hoping a heat gun will lift the paint a little so i can scrape it off but even that's gonna be a long boring job.
