    Default Stain Colour Chart

Companies like the paint maker Dulux have paint colour charts available. Do stain manufacturers have a staining colour chart, which shows the effects of the various types of stains etc on different types of wood? If not are their any online resources that have this information?
    Thanks.

Yes they do but I have found the stain colour varies so much depending on the type of timber, how you prepare the timber, what sealer you use etc. The colours shown on the colour cards are really only a guide I guess because you wont usually get the exact colour on your finished product.
Best way is to try a sample of the stain yourself on a small off-cut of the material you are using to see what it will really come up like. You can change the stain colour by adding more thinners to it and this will lighten the colour. I have found the stain gets darker with each coat you apply. Feast Watson have a chart with details of diluting their stains.

There are also little pieces of timber stained and shown as samples in the hardware/paint store but again these will not be the same as the finish on your project. That's what I have found anyway. But in answer to your original question, yes there are colour cards showing stain colours. Just ask at your local paint shop.
    Reality is no background music.

I'm with you, thanks. Do you know of anything online showing timber with various stain etc applied to various species of timber? Or any finishing books, that give quite extensive examples?

one on-line resource is Feast Watson's web site Feast Watson Commercial - Products

as to finishing books with extensive examples ...
    I don't know of any.
The books I have give examples of what various sanding / staining combinations will deliver on one type of timber.
The intent is for the reader to experiment with the woods and finish types they are using to find what combination of sanding, stain and finish deliver the look you want.
As far as I know there is no general formula, everytime you have to experiment to find what gives the combination that works. with experience you will be able to cut the experimentation trials to one or two
