One for the steam tragics.....
http://www.gowansauctions.com.au/auctions.php
I've been driving past this place for the last 15+ years, peering through the fence and wanting to take a look inside. Now I get my chance.
Normally I wouldn't mention it until it was over, but my interest in steam related stuff is pretty peripheral so.... shrug. Also freight is going to kill you mainlanders for once.
There are items I'm interested in, mainly the few machine tools and sundry other things like the anvil so don't ask me to give an opinion or assist on anything like this, because I'm not real interested in increasing the competition. I wouldn't mind the Bantam lathe as a companion for my Chipmaster (and then I'd sell my Maximat 11) so don't expect it to be a bargain. The big radial arm drill might go cheap though as moving it is going to cost. I don't need it though, I'm happy with my Arboga.
All in all I expect an interesting day and as there's nothing I desperately need, should be fun..... bring money.
BTW Dover isn't really at the ends of the earth, but it's only half an hour's drive away.

That anvil is pretty stuffed. I would look at the post vice though.
I like the milling machine outside.....on its side

The anvil might be stuffed but it's a lot better than the one I currently have, which is a 125mm thick offcut of a 300mm solid round bar. Or a couple lengths of railway iron. And I sadly think it'll sell for over $500 easily.
Post vice - might bid if it goes cheap but not really interested. I don't do a lot of blacksmithing nor do I plan to. I like my welders.
You have to see this place to believe it. The days when it was a museum were before I came down here and I arrived in 1997. Since then a hell of a lot of stuff has been sitting in the weather, slowly rusting away. I'd stop, peer through the fence and drive off again shaking my head at the waste. Now.... a lot of value has gone and restoration will be far harder & more expensive.
OTOH the marine steam engine looks in fine shape and I'd love to have that for a future project.

hmmm, yes, my thoughts on Mr Casey can't really be printed here.
It's not like there were'nt any opportunities to move that gear on before it got to the condition it is in today.
Still at least it has survived and now something can be done.
Credit where credit is due, what has been restored there has been a magnificent job.

I could have gotten a lot more of the back story but never thought to ask. The man who knew where all the bodies were buried died last year. At times like this I miss him a lot.
Anything you're particularly interested in? Viewing is Friday and I'll take a camera with me.

Hi Pete,
I wouldn't mind some pics of,
Lot 5, the Bartram vertical
Lot 7, the Tangye vertical
Lot 60, the Marshall training engine, and,
Lot 118A, the large Tangye Horizontal.
If you don't get a chance, it's no biggie as I am sure we don't have the money but you never know.
A mate of mine has done a history on Bartram, I love the Tangye vertical, training engines are just downright fascinating. We need a replacement for an engine at work and the large Tangye horizontal may just be about the right size.
As I say, no biggie if you don't have time.
Much appreciated.

Oh, I'm going down there on Friday for the open day, never fear. Wouldn't miss it for anything. I've been waiting for years to grovel around in that place. If the Bantam and a few other things I think I'm interested in look like they're trashed I may not attend the auction though. Not like I actually need anything at all that's for sale.
See what I can do about some photos.

Dover Steam Auction
All very Interesting machine's,Perhaps some one would know if the small driving wheel on the mobile steam engine which has the extra pieces wrapt around it,is for getting a higher gear on the lower range driver or is it a tempory added wieght .would make some nice model's out of that lot.

I've been past this place a few times myself. As it's only just down the road, I might pop over on Friday and have look.
I'll take some pictures as well.Geoff

A video of Casey's Steam museum in action (1991). Eternal thanks to the train buff who took the video and posted it to Youtube.

Or search in Youtube for: 'Train Enthusiast's Video Diary 1991-01-28'
Visit to Casey's starts at 4:38.
For those going to tomorrows auction, tell us about your comparisons.

Well, I went down for a look today. The stuff in the weather is beyond anyone except a really dedicated rebuilder for the most part, IMO. I wouldn't bother with any of it.
The stuff undercover - I took a better look at the marine steam engines and they're well worth having. Not my thing so no personal interest, I may post some pix in a day or 2.
I ended up not taking a lot of pix - too depressing and the weather was a bit crap as well.
The Colchester Bantam lathe looks in good shape but there's not a lot of tooling with it. I'm considering putting in an absentee bid as I'm not going back there tomorrow for the auction. Might bid mainly because I have a ton of tooling that can be shared between my Chipmaster, otherwise I wouldn't bother. It's an inch machine in case anyone was wondering.
The big radial arm drill looks perfectly functional but it's big. Expensive to move. Takes a lot of space. I spoke with a man I know who has a foundry & machine shop, he wasn't interested, says they do everything using CNC VMC's these days. So interest likely minimal. Mine is nonexistent as it's too big for my current or future needs.
Other machinery - well I wouldn't bother bidding as I have better gear already.
Good news is, a lot of the better stuff has been moved on prior to this auction so what's there is basically the dregs. So, sorry Phil, not many pix forthcoming from me, seeing all that rusty iron was too depressing.
