    Default What Finish/Chemical is this

    Hi,
I was recently given a wood lathe and it with it a bottle of carnuba wax (flakes no idea what do do with them yet) , a can of Grand father pye's tung oil and a 2 liter tin of some type of liquid think I'd say a bit like a thinner but smells of cedar to me, the paper label has vanished but it is in a Feast and Watson tin. Any thoughts?

The mystery liquid is possibly terbine, an additive for paint/oil that helps it dry. Or any of a whole host of other things!

That would be the can scheduled to end it's life in the garbage, I would say. It could really be anything. Terbene would have a citrusy smell. Try some on a piece of wood and see what it does. I guess it could be pure Turps (from a tree) if it smells like Cedar.

    Regards,

    Rob

Turps would be good guess if the tree turps stuff smells like cedar, it is that sort of consistency and definitely not a citrus smell. Thanks your help

Carnuba wax is a vegetable wax but as flakes it's no use. You need to melt it down (in a clean tin can when the wife is out!). Possibly mix a little pure bees wax with it (just a little.

The pour out and into something that it can set in (I use an Ikea Ice making tray see image)

Use gently and sparingly on your finished items for a high shine.
