Does anyone have a CNC?
Hi all,
I'm looking for someone to make me a MFT top similar to the one below but different dimensions. I'm making a custom top for my bench as the festool purchased ones are not long enough. The sizes are yet to be confirmed but will be around 600mm wide by 1500mm long and 19mm thick. I have attached a cad drawing that I downloaded off the net as a guide. I'm hoping someone may have access to one or know of someone who can do it for a decent price in or around Sydney?
Thanks,
Andy

Honestly, you'd do just as well with a 20mm bit and some careful marking out...

I would have done just that but I need it to be very accurate so I can use these dogs from LV to cross cut large panels etc. If the holes are slightly out it will make my cut out of square.

Reckon MS is right Andy. You can borrow my Hitachi Drill stand jobbie and the drill can be swung around the back so it'll drill dog 'oles - just need a way of clamping the base down so it doesn't overbalance. That's no problem - just use the previously drilled dog 'ole.
Any drill with a 43mm collar will fit it.

The reality may be different.
Good idea to have a TC tipped forstner for this because of the abrasiveness of MDF, esp given that you'll be repeating the exercise every time you need a new top.

Not a bad idea I suppose. I wonder if a plunge router would be a better option?
I might do a test on some scrap and see how I go.

Andy, a plunge router spins to fast, even the variable speed ones. 20mm hole thru mdf, the bit should be around 500 - 700rpm.

Make up a two row template using a fence on a drill press, then just step and repeat using a couple of 20mm dowels to index from.

Using a router How to Make Workbench Dog Holes, with Glen D. Huey - YouTube taken from here drilling dog holes in a bench - YouTube
You could index the plate from the previous drilled hole to save having to mark out each hole.CHRIS

Andy why not use the current top as a template? Use a pedestal drill such as the cheap ones which height can come down to required prior the plunge, set a guide jig up and away you go. A guide jig layout could be done with the same type of drill setup. I have one here you can borrow if need be. As Bret said the base on these can be turned around but unlike a normal drill press the adjustment can be lowered also.

Thanks guys for the replies. I'm going to do a test piece and see how accurate I can drill them. If I wasn't going to use it with dogs as a reference guide for cuts I wouldn't be so concerned about accuracy but if I'm out by 1mm my cuts will be out by 1mm too.
Cheers,
Andy.

If you really get stuck, I can look in to how much it'd cost to get it to you from Melb.

Dude, I asked exactly this question when I found my MFT second hand ~18 months ago... how to replace the top. I found a guy in Syd who would make it via CNC and ship it to me for ~$30 ... multiple copies.
Let me dig up the email. I kept it....its remarkable you should mention this. I'm after someone to CNC me up some templates for table and chair cutouts. My client wants exact corners on zillions of chairs and table tops!! (maybe metal template!)
