    Default I am?

"I was born in poverty in London and spent two stints in the workhouse. I became a household name and arguably a trend setter in my field. Later development revealed a satyrical nature to my work. I am dead !"

You blokes are too good so not many clues (to begin with) .

Could a next clue be I was a silent movie star?

The clue that got it for me was the "two" stints in the workhouse - probably leaving that out would have swamped the google search.

I think the two stints was fairly well known. Assuming I have guessed right of course.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

    Yes .

You blokes are just too good. Next time I will just ask who am I amd leave a blank space.

Next clue was going to be a knight of the realm and after that i have statues of myself in several cities around the world.

    Good try though Paul.

I had a quick go at constructing one myself and then used google to see how easy it would be to find - all too easy I'm afraid. I'll have to divert some of my shed brain to it.

It was of course Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin. The satirical aspect was the movie "The Great Dictator."
