WIP - 2 display boxes
I've finally got the workshop to a standard where I can comfortably start making stuff other than workshop related storage.
I need to fill some box orders that I've had for a while so I thought I better get stuck into them.
First up is two display boxes. I purchased the timber from the Sydney wood show and knew straight away when I saw them that they were destined to be boxes. Initially I thought it was American Oak (figured) but now I'm doubting that and now I'm thinking it may be European beech? Either way it's very nice timber.
Box construction will be dovtails with a floating frame and panel lid. Ideally I'd like to make exposed bridle joints for the lid but I'll see how I go. Alternatively I'll just use dominos.
Inside will be a dovetailed tray with pig skin leather. I'll use Alex S technique to apply the leather.
As the box material is figured I don't want the lid to be too busy so I'm thinking a simple huon pine or rosewood lid to highlight the figure in the box.
Today I milled, cut to size and sanded to 320 to save time later. I will however give it a final sand before the initial shellac coat goes on.
Thanks for looking!

A WIP by Andy. You have my attention.
Could I give a tip on the photography, if I may? Take the shots from further out on a wider zoom. We can then see more of your shop

Thanks for showing so much interest
I'll be back in the workshop tomorrow so I'll post my progress then. I hope to have the dovetails cut for both boxes, rebate cut for the base and a coat of shellac on the inside done by tomorrow. Then I can glue it up and get exact measurements for the tray.
As for dimensions the box is 355 long x 225 wide and 110 high. The thickness is 11.5mm.
I'll use livos kunos oil for the finish and Andrew Crawford's smart hinge from the UK.
Cheers

I didn't get as much time as I would have liked today in the workshop but I did get the dovetails done.
Hopefully more progress tomorrow!

I got some more work done on the boxes today.
I cut the rebate for the bases to go in (8mm). I use a 5mm rebate cutter and take two passes to ensure a nice clean cut.
Then I measured for the base and cut in on the table saw.

Then cut the slot that will support the tray.

I sanded the inside of the boxes to 500 grit and applied a thinned shellac sanding sealer. I do this because it's much easier to prepare the surface now rather than when it's glued up. I also managed to make the trays (far left in the pic below).

These are the hinges that I use. They are called "smart hinges" and you can buy them from the UK. They are very simple to install and they look classy which is why I use them. The photo below also shows the lining that I'll use to line the tray.

And a bridle joint jig that I made for the frame and panel lid.

Looking good Andy. What do you use to cut your dovetails?
