    Default ttit - flood update

Had a few forumites asking how I have been managing with the flooding so I've put some pics together to show the outcome.
Had an awful lot of luck in the last 18months or so and it doesn't seem to have run out yet. The pics (1 to 7) of the house and shed were taken by my young bloke while I was helplessly stranded in VIc', unable to do a thing to help. As you can see, my front step is set at roughly 16 metres above normal river level, leaving the house just under a brick above it , while the shed is right on the 16 meter mark with just enough water dribbling in to wet the shaviings under the lathe. Doesn't get much luckier than that when almost every house around me went under .
Pic 8. At least the Makita bar fridge I won (that wasn't supposed to be delivered until I got back!) was high and dry - note the water line on the chair legs.
Pic 9. A pic of the rampant roo they had to wrestle and put in a neighbours yard until it calmed down.
Pic 10. Now I'm home and I've had a look around at the devastation it's hard to know where to start. The pile of carpet, furniture and belongings in this pic is just a tiny fraction of the rotting mess people are putting on their nature-strips for the council to remove. Churns the stomach to see people sorting through the mess that was their lives.

Off to help out a fellow woodie today who had 900mm through his house and shed - so far the only thing that still works is his shop-vac and a fridge.
Thanks to those that asked after us

    Thumbs up

    Wow that's lucky!!

I'm pleased to hear/see that you escaped the worst of it. I take it that you might be buying a lottery ticket to celebrate.

I was thinking of you every time I heard Emerald was mentioned in a news report.

Glad to hear things weren't too bad at your place Vern.
It must have been a relief to know that your house was spared.
My heart goes out to the ones that weren't as lucky and got water through their homes.

The memory of the 2008 Febuary floods in Mackay are still vivid in my mind.
I know a lot of people who got water through their houses, it was a terrible thing.

I'm lucky that my house is high above the creek, the road out gets flooded, but goes down quickly.

Glad to hear you escaped, dry. My heart goes out to everyone who was inundated.

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

The Weather Gods were certainly on your side TTIT!

I do not pretend to have any sense of understanding what those less fortunate are going through physically and emotionally.

All the best to everyone effected not only in Emerald. Let the Aussie spirit prevail, yet again!

Having had a house go under for 3 days in Brisbane in 1974 I can understand the feelings - the smell of mud never really leaves you - I would stress that all walls/ceilings that have been flooded are cleaned out of mud otherwise humid or rainy weather in the future will have the smell returning.

Best wishes to all and keep an eye on your friends and neighbours especially if they "go quiet".

    Regards,
    Bob

Strewth, Vern! Have you taken out a Tatts ticket this week?

I'm relieved to hear that things aren't as bad for you as we thought. Not that my heart doesn't go out to your neighbours and other flood victims, but it's not as... "personal" with them.

Diamond Ave didn't see a drop in the 2008 flood but they apparently got a good fill this time - don't know how deep it would have been as I haven't been down there yet but the wall of water that came through the racecourse would have filled the street pretty quick.

Haven't heard them metioned in dispatches at all - the creeks over there tend to go up and down pretty quick so the Nogoa/Comet river levels wouldn't have affected them too much.

Great news Vern, I know a lot of Queenslanders have been hit hard. My heart goes out to those having to come home to total ruin.

Many volunteers are being rounded up from all over Australia to help. I know working for Main Roads of the devestation and the amount of work still ahead. Many of my staff are volunteering to help the tired and wiery workers currently working basically 24/7. We are setting up rosters so there are still some left here to fix our own problems. I have a major workshop with many Regional Directors next week to discuss ways forward from a road infrastructure perspective.

Still a lot of rain about this week, so hopefully you continue to stay above the water line.

    Cheers
    Neil
