A round jewellery box
Cleaning up after a big project, is not my favourite job and sometimes get distracted. During the last one I came across a segmented black bean ring 115mm diameter and about 25mm deep, left over from another job that I had forgotten about. I put it to one side for future reference. Ten minutes later a segmented disc 85mm diameter and about 25mm thick, appeared from under a pile of stuff on a bench top. I don't even remember when or why I had mad it. An idea for a small round jewellery bob started to develop. The insert was a fair bit smaller than the black bean ring, so I needed to make a ring to make up the difference. There was some highly figured in the rack, the two segmented rings were made up from the maple. This is what became of some "left over" bits and pieces.
The finished box measures about 125mm diameter and 55mm hig over all. The inside is lined with silver ash veneer and some red felt on the bottom. The original plan was the thread the top, but because its size it may prove a bit difficult to open so it ended up being a rebated slip top.
The panel on the top is red cedar and pink silky oak. The box was finished wit three coats of sanding sealer well sanded back and sprayed with four thin coats of lacquer and buffed with a hard wax. As usual C and C are welcome
Jim

Very nice Jim
Have you had much luck with chasing threads at that diameter? I just gave up on one that was only 90mm diameter as I just couldn't get it started right. Kept ending up with a thread that followed a parallel path 9/10ths of the way and then ducked across a step in a hurry. As an alternative, I went to the trouble of setting up a jig to hold the router and cut a thread the same pitch as the headstock shaft instead and it did work but the router chipped out the timber I was using so bad I gave up and did a pop fit lid instead. Inland rosewood just doesn't like being routed in that fashion but I will try it again one day on friendlier timber.

Hi Vern,
Thanks for the comment. I haven't had the need yet for a project larger than about 70mm. I intend to make another round box a bit deeper with a removable round tray, It will be about 90mm diameter. I will do the thread chasing on something not quite as hard a your rosewood. I have some of it here and will see how it goes. I would suggest you try with the tool rest at varying positions below centre and lower the speed a little after the thread has been struck.

That's a beauty Jim. I wish I could find leftovers like that at my place!

Always a treat to see your turnings.
Glue but no threads, are you mellowing?
Hope to see this in person soon.Mobyturns
