Aged look for furniture

Hi all,
I've made up some bed heads for the girls beds and SHMBO want's that antique painted look that some shops are selling as "french provincial" whatever that means

The furniture simply looks to be painted and then rubbed through the paint in places to make it look worn.

I've made the bed heads in pine and was going to spray on an undercoat and a satin enamel (both tinted to an antique white shade). After the paint has well & trulie dried, I was simply going to give it a hit with a ROS back through the paint to the raw timber underneath...just along the edges a little bit to make it look worn. And then just rub on a bit of wax over the raw timber to seal it a bit.

I've read about rubbing a candle on the raw timber before painting & that should assist the paint to come off & give the job that worn out look...but I think that was under a milk paint mixture. I don't want to go to that much trouble, & I recon the enamel would be a better wearing product.

Any thoughts on the ROS approach to this ?

Hey Johno, there are thousands of ways and everyone will have a different idea. I have done a few antiquey washed out beaten up finishs but I have found the "sticky finish sealer" (forget the exact name) very good. I have painted on a coat, brush is rougher than spray and you can mess it up a bit. Give it a light sand, throw a bit of tint in if you want and do the same again. Dab it here and there with an old rag when its still a bit tacky. Spray with a coat of matt estapol when you have it looking the way you want. Have fun

also check out www.porterspaints.com, they have all the best wash type paints for what you need, if you can get to a store they usually have some stunning examples, or just give them a call.

Porters is good stuff, I use quite a bit of it too. But most people already have some daggy old under coat or scrap paint in the shed. If you want it to look old and ruff whats better than old and ruff paint and its cheap.
