Is this a bearer or a wall plate?
Just say you wanted to have some floor joists supported mid span by a brick wall but you needed to raise the height of the wall to meet the bottom of the joists. Would the piece of timber under the joists sitting on the wall (in red) be called a bearer or a wall plate? What would you be used for nominal fixing? Would it be better to lay an extra course of bricks instead?
