paint under door

Hi all............is it necessary to paint on top and under a door, particually under an exterier door......................does the paint seal the door against moisture?

its theoretically desirable but not often done.

Gday Neddy, 'tis a good idea on exterior doors where moisture may get to the bottom of the door & cause it to swell. Reason it gets missed a lot seems to be that people paint the door when it's on, which makes it a little tricky to get to the underneath!

Best shot is to paint those surfaces that are hard to get to prior to hanging the door.

I've found there's a easy way paint the bottom of the door while its on its frame, grab one of those edging tools with the fibre pad, remove the pad then don some gloves, dip it in the paint drain it off then hold it up against the bottom of the door and with the other hand swing the door back/fowards a few "s(or cm's!)so it rubs the paint on repeat along the lenght of the door!(KISS theorem)

Depends what you call "under" and "on top"?

If I did that when they were sealing/painting the head and the foot of the door whilst they were laying on stools awaiting hanging, wouldn't that be the front and back of the door?

Put it this way - any single piece of wood (doors included) benefits from sealing on all six surfaces: front, back, top edge, bottom edge, left edge, right edge.
