Thicknesser rebuild WIP. Could take a while
Here is a little project I have set for myself. An SCM S50 thicknesser. The intent is to rebuild the machine and add it to my workshop. Below are a few photos of the main chassis and a few other components.

Hi,
The L'vincables where good solid machines, should be a good performer with that cutter head.
Does it have 2 outfeed rollers or just the one?1915 17"x50" LeBlond heavy duty Lathe, 24" Queen city shaper, 1970's G Vernier FV.3.TO Universal Mill, 1958 Blohm HFS 6 surface grinder, 1942 Rivett 715 Lathe, 14"x40" Antrac Lathe, Startrite H225 Bandsaw, 1949 Hercus Camelback Drill press, 1947 Holbrook C10 Lathe.

Got some work done over the last few days.
I have washed and degreased the interior of main chassis. The interior has been painted with red oxide. I know that it won't be seen but I can't help myself. The exterior has been sandblasted by myself. Cost was $50.00 for the two bags of 40 grit garnet from Hare and Forbes and a $20.00 sandblasting gun. My suggestion if you are contemplating going down a similar path is to get this part done by others. You really do need a much bigger compressor than can be run on single phase power, and it will be quicker, much quicker.
I sprayed the exterior of the chassis with etch primer, filled a few of the bigger casting defects with some blade putty and recoated with etch primer. I am using industrial paint that is designed for machine applications. A pot of Taubmans house paint just won't cut it.
2 coats fo enamel paint and it looks a treat I reckon. The colour is Caterpiller yellow, rather than the drab green that was originally the case. I'm quite fond of bright colours.
The next parts to see attention are the table lift mechanism. New bearings and seals will be installed. I have repainted the column reservoir and will be assembling this into the chassis in the next few days.

...they are a great machine. I used one quite a few years ago.
I would hate to think what you paid for the cutter head.
Magnificent work.

The head cost me $2500.00 landed in brisbane. I arranged a direct purchase from china. I did the drawings with a little help from an engineer. All worked out fine. I was going to use a guy in Melbourne who had a 6 axis cnc lathe. Was going to cost me about $700.00 more but I was happy to pay the extra to get one made in Oz, however he sold his machine 2 weeks before I was ready to go. Bummer, but I saved a few bucks anyway. More photos later.

Should look the goods when done, did you buy as a doer upper or did you just decide to do a refurbish?

I've had the machine for a few years as a doer upper, and an upgrade to the thicky I have had for about 8 years. This machine is 5th thicknesser I have owned. I shoudn't think the upgrading will be required again. Should see me out for the rest of my days.
I have a few more pics of further work that has been done that I will put up shortly.
