Plasma cutter with concrete saw question
G'day all, This is my first post so thanks in advance for any advice. I've got an interesting problem. I want to cut a hole in the bottom of my shed out back to create a cubby hole for storage but the thing is its about 50mm of concrete sandwiched in between two pieces of 20 mm steel. I was playing around with the hypotherm a few years back and made it like this out of boredom and spare parts so I'm to blame. Should I prime the cut (a 20cm by 20cm square) with my 50 amp plasma cutter before I take a concrete saw to it or just hire out a concrete saw and take care of it all with that. I've never used one before but know they're fairly powerful. Cheers

Welcome Goldengram11
I have only ever used demo type saws, but i know that diamond blades designed for concrete don't like steel too much, i think they get too hot, but i know that the diamond can just disappear before your eyes. The hire places normally charge by the mm for diamond wheel wear. If you go for a reinforced abrasive wheel you will get there but it will take you some time, just use a steel wheel (or 3) to get through the steel and then change to a masonry one. oxy/acet won't cut it, it'll just keep popping and blowing back, tiz hard to cut laminated steel with a torch let alone throwing conka into the mix.
If it were me I would try gouging rods, do you have an arc welder Goldengram11 ?

I was thinking more like thermal lance. But you need oxy to run it and oxy/acetylene would sure help lighting it.
Could be a little messy thought

I appreciate the advice lads but this project might be more trouble than its worth by the sound of it. Maybe I was just looking for an excuse to play with a consaw and the plasma
Still, part of me likes the idea of figuring on how to accomplish the task now that its presented itself. I'll take pics if I can get around to turning up my digital camera since my phone's is #####. Then you could see exactly what I'm talking about.
Cheers,
Graeme
