How do I finish this with this problem
I have put some beading on to a door panel but damaged (softwood) the rail as per photograph attached.
I intend to stain the doors with water based pine stain and then apply a Danish oil finish.
With what can I fill this hole.
I would like to use polyfilla thinking the water stain would take ok.
Advice welcomed please.woody U.K.

Polyfilla - that door?
It might work but the movement of the door would no doubt crackout the filler very soon. Water based wood filler would be a better option and certainly easier to stain to the same degree as the timber.
Pollyfilla granules I find do not sand as smooth as wood fillers.
Try a test piece with pollyfilla and stain first. I presume it is an interior door we are talking about.

Can you cut a sliver of matching wood and glue that in?

Jow,
I would finish the timber work first - otherwise you are guessing what colour it will end up and hoping that your filler will end up the same, not too much chance of that happening. I use coloured wax sticks for filling, they come in a variety of colours and you can mix them together to get different colours. If you want to be really tricky you can even roughly mix two colours together and get a "grain" effect. I use "mirowax" sticks which are made by Mirotone, however I believe it's an Aussie company and may not be available where you are. A good cabinetmaker's supplier should have something similiar.
