Ladies and Gentlemen: Time please.
Please remember that even though this is Open Slather the original rules apply regarding personal attacks.
I am a little astounded that one post has generated so much vitriol against the person.
Everyone is entitled to their view of things and can pretty well state it here.
Attack the opinion or the idea but not the person.
It would also help if you checked ALL the posts before replying hastily in a half cocked manner. then check your reply before posting.
Bat has asked for the thread to be deleted. It has been done and any rep points have reverted to the original score.

Sorry . I totally disagree with this. Bat brought this on himself by bragging about owning weapons of a particular type and then getting upset because we didn't say how wonderful he is. At no time did I attack him personally, yet I did put forward arguments that I consider important and carefully considered. This act of censorship does Bat no credit for asking for it, and, I'm afraid, the moderators no credit for capitulating. It's not often I disagree with the moderation here, but to delete the entire thread on these grounds does you no credit. Some posts admitedly needed culling, but NOT the entire thread.

I asked Bat to delete it, he agreed. Under the terms of Open Slather we (Admins or mods) won't delete a thread unless instructed by the originator. We may ask the poster to delete it but it is their call. I have agonised over this one for a week. Had I been home it would have been deleted and not moved.

Fair enough .
It still does Bat no credit - for refusing to consider that he might be wrong and then for running away. If he'd tried to answer his critics, I might have a different view but sadly, he didn't have the courage or belief in his values - he chose to attack the opposer rather than the opposing attitude. I guess he found it easier than to think about his own values.

why not just close the thread and let everyone make their own decisions of the posts , only a suggestion , as you know I have always defended the moderators in this forum but your two posts leave something to consider
1 Bat has asked for the thread to be deleted
2 I asked Bat to delete it, he agreed
I never issue Reddies as I don't see the point but due to this this thread reddies were issued by bat to members who only disagreed with his post
perhaps an appoligy by him to those he slurred by issuing reddies without following the guide lines set out in the rules of the forum would be appropriate as I feel some members were insulted by his responses.

And that is why removing this thread was the wrong move. The moron (deliberate use of the derogatory) is now able to mislead as much as he likes without having to answer to what really happened.
You either allow discussion or you do not. To allow a thread to run and then remove it is against what this part of the forum was set up for.

Aw crap! I've got to log in more often, I missed most of the blowout it looks like. I started distancing myself from bat when he started going off about home defence.

Mathew
It seems bat had formed the view that Hoges' movie was a documentary and - when he learnt that it was actually a piece of fiction - he came over all sulky and decided that Aussies were a bunch of Southern Hemisphere cheese-eating surrender monkeys (I think that was Homer's description of the French, was it not?)
Poor old bat - it's a difficult thing to learn that life is not actually as it is writ in the tabloids.Driver of the Forums

Unfortunately with a topic like this and others e.g. greenies versus forestry etc there is no answer because neither side will seek middle ground. We have radicals on both sides and while they exist there will never be a solution.
This has always been a friendly board no matter what is discussed but when it starts a slanging match over who is right and who is wrong on a subject that can never reach a satisfactory (to all) answer then I will ask the poster to delete it in "open slather" or I will delete it myself in the open forums.
Whilst it remains sensible discussion with opposing or agreeing points put across it will stay.
This particular post had crossed the line.

dam dam dam its gone
Gun laws an issue I feel stongly about, I had just gone away to calm down after my initial rude response (which I did withdraw) and come back with some well thought out arguments and its gone dam! An internet forum is one of the safest places to debate a volatile topic so why remove it competely. If a member is bothered by the opinions they can simply agree to disagree and go onto one of the other wonderful forums on this site.
I totally disagree with removing this thread, why have a forum called open slather and then censor it,perhaps it should be called 'slightly ajar slather"
Hhmmm perhaps the fact that the thread got so outof hand it was removed backs up my opinion.
Once again appologies to bat for my dick remark.
regards julian
