Ames Vice?
Has anyone come across an Ames bench vice?
I picked one up today, 10 inch wide jaws and the clamping is done not by means of a screw but by a very heavy duty cam working against a powerful spring.
Cheers,
Jim

Here are some pictures. As you can see it is quite a heavy duty device. Fully open it is eleven inches and that's with inch thick softening.

Looks as if I've found a rarity.

Nifty! I've not come across anything like that before, either.
But I don't understand how it works. The middle shaft obviously locks in the rear jaw when you depress the cam, but I can't figure out how it manages to do that, & still slide smoothly when un-locked. Can you enlighten me (with a verbal or pictorial explanation)??
Google was no help!
Cheers,IW

Unfortunately Ian, that thread is 6 years old and the OP hasn't been active for a couple of years. Don't hold your breath.

I would think that by cranking the handle up & down it closes onto whatever is placed within the jaw.It may very well close by means of hand pushing also. The handle shows it locks into place by means of the cam shaped nodule.

I'd assume it's just like an oversize caulking gun.
