    Talking Hows it going?

Looking to get into the woodworking scene and make some fishing lures - Poppers and Rapalas.. stick baits.

I havnt done wood work since high school days about 8 years ago. Always enjoyed my time making things and found it to be very relaxing.

Right now i am hoping to pick up a nice beginners Wood Lathe that can handle a piece up to 250mm long. Preferable with variable speed so i could slow it right down to add paint and an epoxy finish.

Once i pick up the right machine and get some tools. i will surely be firing a million questions here .

    Cheers,

    George New.

    Thumbs up

G'day George and welcome to the house of fun>>>>

This has been said many times about the concept of a "beginner's lathe" there is basically no such beast. What youneed is a lathe that will do the job you want it to do, with the features you want.

Well, you are on the right track; you want variable speed, you want to turn things up to 259mm long. OK, what happens when you get hooked, totally addicted?? Just think ahead a bit to such issues as the swing over the bed or whether 250mm will be long enough. Accuracy is another thing, paticularly for pen and finial work..

Anyway, good luck with the lathe and have heaps of fun sniffing shavings and dust.

    Welcome to the forum.

I would suggest that you make the lures on the lathe. As for epoxy and paint on the slow turning rod motor. It does 3ish turns per minute. I use that when I have to apply epoxy on the binding and wait for it to dry.
