can an eletrician do work and turn a blind eye
HI All
I know this is a very touchy subjuct
Have some major problems with old wiring, which need replacing
I what an eletrician to do the work, but does he have to issue an Certificate of Compliance
due to is my mum house and dad many years ago did was extra wiring ( it all up to standard but it look untidy, and he liked junction boxes )
So can an eletrician fix the fault and turn a blind eye to dad's wiring
or must he replace it all......
As i said i know it's touchy. but i don't want mum to get ripped off
but it has got to be safeEverything looks better with a ( or two ) glass of Red

Firstly the electrician is only responsible for the work he has done
The rest comes under our Duty of care
He (the electrician) is suppose to report both to the house-owner and the Chief Electrical inspectors office any illegal, dangerous or faulty wiring.
This is done via a defect report that is downloaded (from energy safe Vic website) and fill in the blanks
If the electrician does work on the property and doesn't report an findings can and almost will be fined.
(Its called covering our A*SE)
I personal have refused to touch 2 houses in the past twelve months and I know of others that have also because of the someones DIY electrical work.
My suggestion is get the lot fixed and tidied up to regulations it may not be that bad
But without taking a look I wouldn't be able to comment.Electricity:

my understanding of it is that a certificate must be issued for the work that the electrician does.
Any circuit he works on must be brought up to date with the standards, eg if you add lights to an existing circuit, he must make sure the others comply with the regs.
He is also obliged to report any other work which does not comply with the standards. there is a section on some certificates for this [i've only ever seen the certificates which are issued for my workplace, it's a large factory and we have custom forms to fill in, so it may be different.]
however, i may be wrong.

I personally would not touch your house with a big stick unless you agreed I fix everything and make the whole house safe and then give you a certificate of safety!
Thats what there called and thats what they provide.
Piece of mind your home is safe.
How can a sparky worth his salt say that circuit is safe heres your certificate. I didnt see the rest of the ???? in your roof.
Sorry get your house fixed for if not your sake your kids...
or for someone elses kids.

G'Day Don777,
The way I see it is that the Elestrician who does the work
has to / will leave the place SAFE and finished in a "WorkPerson like manner".
BUT
Once he sees anything unacceptable,
then it becomes his Duty of Care,
whatever way he decides to deal with it.
