Today's Cutting
Tackled this ugly red cedar today and had to turn it to get the good wood off the outside. It was pretty rotten and ended up collapsing on the deck spilling rotten heart all over the place. It was still worth the effort.

That log looks more pink than my very limited dealings with red cedar recall. Is that typical? At least one person has told me colour variation can depend on which side of a hill the tree was growing.

Paul: like many timbers the original colour is often quite different to what we are accustomed to dealing with.
Freshly cut Red Cedar is a case in point. It darkens with exposure to air and light.
The same is true for Purple Gigee, Tatajuba and Purpleheart, as well as others.
