Metal Detector
Hopefully this is the correct sub-forum for this.
I am at the stage of looking for a metal detector, and wondered what is the best value detector. So far I have noted the TS80a, Wizard and even an eBay cheapie TS800. Are there any others I should consider? And are there any brands better than others, or are they all similar in sensitivity etc?
Help from the more experienced would be appreciated.

depends on what you want to use it for.
My friend has a 1500 buck one and mine is 70 bucks SEBEN Online - Ferngläser, Fernglas, Fernglaeser, Teleskope, Spektiv, Teleskop, Spektive, Binoculars, Nightvision, Nachtsichtgeräte, Nachtsichtgeräte (can get on ebay).
On the beach looking for lost stuff they are no more or less sensative than each other.

I have a hand held as well that I got off ebay as well.
When you find stuff with the big one, I then search with the wand style one.
Same deal as well, my friends 300 dollar hand held wand works no better than mine for 30 bucks.
And I get to use it for searching for nails in timber as well.

I have a hand held with the round ring (detector) that unfolds, a Carba Tec job, I find it to be quite adequate, not good at picking up a completely rusted nail and of course won't detect non ferrous.
It has saved a resharpen a few times.

Although things may have changed since, when I did some investigation into these a few years ago it appeared that most of the inexpensive (and some expensive) hand held ones use the same basic circuit but just with different shaped antennae.
I have the TS80 from Carbatech which I use for scanning logs from back yards prior to milling and prior to planing recycled timber. It has missed a couple of nails, probably because I was not careful enough in using it. If the nails are soft iron and if they are at right angles to the chain the chainsaw just goes through them like butter but hardened metal is another matter.
As PJT says a bigger problem is the non-ferrous stuf like glass, concrete, blue metal, ceramic etc.

Got a Garrett Super Scanner (the one you see the airport security people with) at work. Mid range price ($129 on eBay) and works a treat.

I have 30 dollar detectors and I have a 500 dollar detector. There is no comparison the high dollar detector is a ton better. If you are just looking for nails, a 30 dollar detector is more than adequate

I am leaning towards the Lee Valley small detector at C$21.50 + postage. The rationale is that it is being sold by a woodworking supply company, so it could be argued that it should be acceptable for woodworkers, and it is relatively cheap.
Has anyone got this, and if so any comments?

No the 500 dollar one isn't handheld. It's for beaches and such. My point was, the more you pay, there really is a difference. They have handhelds for upwards of 2 to 3 hundred. But for finding nails in wood, a cheapie is all you need
