Finishes for external pot plant stand

I've just about completed a 3-tiered pine & cypress pot-plant stand so my more intelligent half won't have to place her pots directly on our new deck flooring.

However, as usual, I've raced in like a bull at a gate without giving much thought to the best way to finish it since it will be outside all the time. My initial thinking is a sanding sealer, then a light shade of FW Prooftint, followed by an oil-based polyurethane (maybe Cabots).

I'm certain that there will be better lasting suggestions with all the accumulated experience here though.

if ya want it to last very long at all, a good quality oil bassed primer and the best white enamel you can get.

pine as apotplant stand no matter what you paint it with wont last long with the water & dirt.

Hmmmm. Even though you are the messenger of bad news, soundman, thanks for your honesty. It's the only way I'll learn. I'm not averse to painting it with white oil-based paint, and that will give me enough time to properly plan making one from a suitable timber that will look good on the merbau deck (with 4 coats of Cabots Merbau Aquadeck).

I don't suppose you might have suggestions for a suitable timber? I mean, I don't want it to look identical to the deck flooring, but it would be great if it were a complimentary timber style and colour (if that makes any sense?). Cost is also one of the considerations.

You'd have to go a long way to do better than merbau in that situation.

If ya not concerned about the longevity of the planter....just drown the bugger in the becking product and let the cards fall where they may.

ya going to be refinishing the deck every couple of years anyway.
