Dado Stack/Blade Size. 6" or 8" and Table Saw Power?
I am very close to purchasing a table saw and have the Woodman SB1012 firmly in my sights. It is basically coming down to dado capability. The saw is rated at 2HP and my concern is how it will go running dado blades and making trench cuts for shelving, cabinets etc., as well as cutting tenons. Everything else about the saw gets a solid tick from me. It seems to be top notch in the price range with some key features like fence quality, blade tilt, build etc., appealing to me. Thanks to those you who have seen and responded to my earlier posts along similar lines. I realise this post is a related but a little more specific.
My question is whether anyone has used 6" dado blades? Are they any good or is there a quality of cut/effectiveness trade off? Do you think using a 6" dado stack will help overcome the fact that this table is a 2HP model or is the reality that 8" dado blades are the minimum recommended for this type of work and that if I am still concerned then I should really start looking at 3HP machines including installing a 15A power supply?
Many thanks

I have this saw and use a Freud 8 inch dado to full width in hardwood and it has been fine. Take time and be sensible about how you use it, ie multiple cuts to achieve deep depth and it will be fine. In reality there are not too many situations where one would be cutting more than half in an inch.
It is a great saw for the $. Make sure you spend time setting it up properly and use the best blade you can get your hands on.
Cheers,
Nick

I'm also running an 8" dado set on this saw and I haven't had any problems even in HW.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

The Freud dado set is excellent, gives perfect cuts every time without any tearout.

I was thinking of getting one of these from Rockler for approx $180 delivered. They retail here in Oz for $245. There is more variety available from the US. At the very least you can sometimes get a better model for a similar price to a lower end one in Australia.
I just did a quick estimate and you can get a Freud 10", 50T combo saw blade plus the dado set from Rockler (US) delivered for $252 (probably a little less after currency conversion).Last edited by metester; 2nd February 2013 at 02:08 PM. Reason: Updated with last sentence.

Mine was from somewhere on Amazon, I can't remember the price but it would have been a no brainer in comparison to purchasing in Australia; even including GST. What irks me the most about buying saw blades is that there is very little available locally.

Just placed my order with Rockler. I went to the Aust distributor in Padstow a few years ago when I was looking to buy a table saw and dust extractor, and got treated like a moron. I won't ever buy from them. Besides, much better range and cheaper in the US, even with shipping.
Also spent some money at Lee Valley's website. A late Christmas for me!
cheers,

Metester......I also have the SB12 saw (my review here https://www.woodworkforums.com/f171/s...et-saw-148542/) watch out for the table top...mine was bowed and the replacement the same
i also use a Dado.....mine is a 8" CMT set. Very smooth and cuts like butter....the saw can handle full stack 8" dado as long as you take max 1/4" passes.

Hi Simops. I saw your review. Good info there. When I finally pull the trigger I will be taking the straight edge to it as a priority! Nice to hear that the CMT dados are another option. I have used their router bits and they are a reliable and effective product.

Thanks Simops. Sounds promising.
I like your custom fence particularly the use of the UHMW sheet. With regard to your zero clearance insert, are they levelling screws I can see in the picture? If so, what sort did you use? I am keen to make a few for the saw however am undecided as to whether I should plane them to the exact thickness required or simply use screws of some description to act as levelers.

I had some left over polyethylene so used it for the Dado fence ( machines well with router bit) but plywood would do just as well.
I decided to use small wood screws as levellers countersunk flush. I used 9mm ply I had (actually 9.6mm). The slot casting in the table is 10.6mm deep so hence I used screws to level. Of course if you are using solid wood you could thickness it to the same depth as slot.
have fun

Nummins, can u please tell me the model number of the dado, I am looking for very clean cut in hardwood and softer grained material. 5/8th arbor 8inch dado suggested.
