Default I'm after a piece of spring steel...

I'm looking for a few inches of spring steel – perhaps a piece of old clock spring or door latch spring etc. The dimensions of the broken spring I have are 4.2mm wide and .9mm thick.

I appreciate the chances of locating stuff of these exact dimensions are probably zero, but anything wider or slightly thicker could likely be made to work.

If you can help me out with this, please send me a PM.

WW, if all else fails, blue steel scraper blades from bunnys are 0.8 mm thick and maybe someone local can cut off a strip to exact size for you. If no one local can do this let me know.

    WW,
I use bandsaw blades or the steel strapping that packs of timber are made from.
I did a pair of springs for a secret drawer from the saw blades.they are still throwing that drawer out well.
And also a replacment sprng for the most incredible box that came in for restoration once.
ci 1810 English that had ten A to Z slide out sticks that had to be set to the right word of the owners choice to get it open.

I have the oxy ready to go as well if you need them shaped , holed, hardened and tempered.

    Regards Rob

Thanks for the offer Rob. I measured some steel strapping earlier and it's a bit thin for the job at around .8mm and the thickest (scrap) bandsaw blade I have at present is .7mm thick.

However, you jolted my memory and I found a perfect .92mm thick piece of scrap blade in my tin of scratch stock blades. I hate that my brain cells are diminishing.

I should have mentioned, the spring steel is for repairing a lock, hence the critical thickness.

The saw blade I used was a 35mm deep blade but with a guess I dont think it's as thick as that .92, I will be interested to have a look in the morning.
    Glad you have found some.
I do have thicker spring material, it would have to be swaged down though.

Thanks Rob. I'll anneal the piece I found in the morning and cut it to size. It will require a bit of gentle shaping and then I can harden and temper it.

Out of interest, is Rob 'The Lock' Wilson still working out of the back of number 1425?
