How to reduce the size of photos to 100kb
What's the best way to reduce photos to less than 100kB,
The photos that I want to post are in Jpeg at 1.2MB.

Gday Eemgee,
Two things to be done. Resize the image to (say) 800x600, this will fit on the average forumite's monitor without scrolling around the screen.
This will reduce file size significantly, but still not enough to get under the 100Kb limit.
You then need to compress the image, this can be done in most graphics programs.
Some progs to do it - Jpegcompress, image resizer, irfanview, in Win XP, Paint.net, photoshop, etc. More compression reduces the file size more, but at the expense of image quality. Some progs give you an idea of final file size, others need a bit of trial & error.
Been discussed aplenty, one thread lately if you go back a week or so you'll find it.
Cheers...............Sean

If you are scanning in photos you should be able to adjust the scan quality (dpi), which will give a smaller file size.
If they are from a digital camera, the software that came with it might have a capability to resize the photos.
I used to use the Kodak Photosoftware to resize picts.
Then I found a link to an application (might even have been on this forum, can't remember now) which when I downloaded it and run it, all I do is right click on the photo, select resize and choose from about 4 different sizes.
Other option is, if the photos are just for posting, you might be able to select a different setting on your camera, which will give you a smaller file size.
A 2mp camera will go a fairly good job of printing out an A4 size print, so a lot of people are taking photos with their 5mp cameras, and all they are doing is clogging up their hard drive.
Cheers.

Perhaps we should see about getting one of the better threads covering this made into a "stcky" thread.
I'll second Irfanview. It's small, free (or was last I looked) and easy to use. Open the image, crop/resize to 800x600, select "Save As" then rename and make sure type ".jpg" is selected before clicking OK. Choosing about 50% compression will shrink it to between 20-40k or so.

The application I was talking about is called ImageResizerPowertoy.
Use google to find it. Free.
Its just one click of the mouse to resize the file. Best I've come across, fast and easy. Select multiple files to resize as many as you want. Takes about a second.
Cheers
PS When I started typing my first reply, there were no other posts. Then all of a sudden there were about 2 or 3. Hot Topic !!

Thanks everyone,
I've been trying to compress in paint Shop Pro but I keep getting a picture that isn't suitable for posting - no detail.
I'll try your suggestions
Thanks again

Image resizer
If you go to http://www.getpaint.net/index.html you can download PaintDotNet free (but watch out - it is 49MB).
This program is as good as Adobe PaintShop but free. Developed by University of Washington PH D students as a replacement for the old Paint in Windows. They did a brilliant job.
As you go to save a picture a windows comes up where you can adjust the size of the picture to be saved. A simple slide bar and it tells you before you save how big it will be.

Anothe free program
for my 2c worth GIMP is the go although its a larger program a sort of poor mans "Adobe Photoshop" so can be used as a for manipulating as well as resizing and other graphics applications if that sort of thing interests you otherwise its just overkill..the link I have is http://www.gimp.org and no it doesn't cost though they do not mind if you contribute to ongoing development

I use a program called pixresizer. You can get a copy at http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm
Very simple to use and allows selection of multiple images so you can resize them in a batch rather than one by one.

I've made this thread sticky in the pics forum as while this has been done plenty of times before, there are some really good suggestions here.
Feel free to add your methods too!Have a nice day - Cheers

I second Don with paint.net , I reckon it's the bees knees.
Well featured but not bloated.
Can get it on some mag cover CDs rather than downloading, that goes for the GIMP & some others as well.
Cheers...............Sean
