soft closer for storage box
Hi there,
I'm making a childrens' storage box. I have pretty much finished the box but having troubles with getting the lid to soft-close.
There is a fair bit of weight to the lid, because it is about 53cms deep, by 100cms wide, made from 20mm tongue and groove cypress pine boards.
I have installed two Prestige Medium to Heavy Weight Soft Close Lid Stays from Bunnings. Problem though - they seem to have little effect on the lid closing speed. It still slams closed with a fair bit of force. I am uploading a photo of the back of the hinge specs. I have marked where i think the approximate torque movement is on my box. It's obviously outside the range of one soft close stay, but I thought it would be well within the range for two.
I'm looking now for a third soft close mechanism, probably one that can mount in the centre of the rear of the box I guess?
Thanks for the help in advance

Gas struts, I know they are for opening but also work as a slow closer when pushed shut, try the ute canopy accessory suppliers.
Have you looked at screen door closers, you can adjust themThe person who never made a mistake never made anything
Cheers

Ah those Prestige closers are at most rubbish and at least, poorly labelled. It's hard for something that is positioned so close to the hinge to overcome the closing torque of a decent sized (weight) lid.
I'd look for gas struts as well.

Check out the Maxi Up from Häfele (page 6.124 of the catalogue). We've used them at work before for the same thing as you and it has stacks of resistance, especially if you use a pair of them.

Thanks. I have contacted a gas strut supplier and they said they could help but that what gas struts do is help to open the box lid and then leave it open (think of a hatchback boot lid). But that gas struts will be no help in making the close into a soft close. In fact he said that you could set the struts so that it will ALWAYS open the box, so you need to push it closed all the way and then clip it closed. Any advice? I'm pretty convinced to return these rubbish stays to bunnings and getting my $100 back (yep that's right!!!)

Gas struts aren't designed for what you want. Get the Häfele closers, they work well and are adjustable.

Thanks elanjacobs. Which one do you recommend? There are three different ones and I couldn't find out how to buy off their website. Do you know of any Australian distributors?

Page 25 has a table for you to work out which one you need based on lid size and weight http://easylink.hafele.com.au/is-bin...iftandTurn.pdf
Maybe give them a call and see if you can buy direct from them or if they have a list of retail distributors. Otherwise, a local cabinet maker might order them in for you.

$100
I will be making a toy box soon and have searched on here for soft closing hinges. I remember a fair few posts containing different types, some of which people said worked. Have you tried that search.
I've also dealt with Hettich previously for cabinet hardware.
Nathan.

Ah ok thanks. Yes i have installed a long continuous hinge along the back. Now just looking for a good quality soft closer. Don't really even care about the stay - I can just put a chain on it so it holds open at say 100 degrees
