Your pencil.
You sharpen your pencil now and then. It is whittled away in time as you use it. It becomes a stump.
Why oh why....do they have graphite or lead or whatever it is.....running right up to there ends????
Will the hollow at the end that is leadless....shear or split? Because it has nothing in it?
Sure!! A stump pencil is great for getting into tight spots when tracing an outline for patterning.
I say it's inpractical.
The lead only need be two thirds as long as the wooden stick itself.
Yes!!!! I lose sleep at night wondering.

It would cost more to make the lead shorter.

Reminds me of "why is a fish?" the classic surrealist conundrum. I expect it makes them easy to manufacture, long lengths can be cut and would be cheaper to make than short lengths.

First time I've ever heard anyone complaining, that they've got too much lead in their pencil.
