We're getting our downstairs area renovated to granny-flat status, and need to soundproof the ceiling which will be mounted to the joists of the upper timber floor. With two stomping toddlers upstairs the noise is deafening from below. We've included soundproofing plasterboard mounted to rubber-padded batten-mounts as recommended for noise reduction, but we've since had someone recommend including soundproofing insulation as well. We'd prefer not to do this because of the cost blowout, but would regret it if the plasterboard and mounts don't adequately cut out the noise from upstairs. Does anyone have experience with soundproofing in these circumstances? What do you recommend?
