Finishing Cocobolo

Hi I'm new to this forum and do apologies if this topic has been covered. I did a search and found nothing.

I'm presently making cocobolo tables with granite inserts and was wondering if anyone has any "tricks" to finishing cocobolo they would be willing to share. I have been using Renaissance wax but would prefer to use a stronger finish if possible.

Andy you might be better off trying an American site rather than an Australian site . I am sure that many Aussies would not be too familiar with finishing Cocobola. That must be one hell of a table.

Shellac is probably best finish for what you're after, especially for an oily (and EXPENSIVE!!) timber like cocobolo. Judging by how well some old handtools have stood up with a shellac finish on their handles, it would be a waste to use polyU, NClacquer or oil. Nonetheless, a lot of Chinese rosewood furniture only ever had a wax finish burnished into it, and they've lasted very well.
