Lining underneath stairs

Such a thing as a daft question....?

I have just had a new staircase installed and want to line underneath, I understand i should use either ply or more likely v- cut MDF. There are not too many angles although I have space ofr a small cupboard underneath the bottom angle.

Can I screw (or nail) the mdf into the strucutre of the stair case (having marked where the underside of the treads are) or should I first attach a small frame?

If I wanted to square off the profile at the top would anchoring to the two walls be adeqate? Has anyone a good "how to" link? It looked simple when I demolished the old stairs.

There are no daft questions around here only some of the answers.

I have built a walk in cupboard under the staircase and I used 13mm chipboard to line it by nailing straight against the underside of the stairs. I built a frame for a ceiling inside the cupboard rather than sloping to the top which I also lined with chipboard.

To cover the joints I used a timber coverstrip where the sloping side met the ceiling and quad in the corners. This was many years ago in my rough carpentry days, even before I got a Triton Workcentre , and I never have had any problems with it.

These days I would be more accurate and not need the coverstrip or quad but after all it is inside a cupboard.

A while ago we had the same dilema, being the woman of the house, I decided I wanted a place to store mops vacuum etc so we built a wall frame that ran up past the stringers to the ceiling which acted as balastrade as well and used gyprock to line. Left a doorway on bottom floor, put a light in it and hey presto - a hide the junk storage space. We enclosed the steps using pine boards to fill the riser space by nailing to the treads - timber stairs - yummmmmm
