The best album of all time is Led Zeppelin's fourth album, known as Led Zeppelin IV, or "the Runes Album" after the four mysterious symbols that comprise it's actual title. This has actually been proven true by science, as well as being a point of common agreement among cross-cultural social philosophers, theologians and taxi-drivers.
Or any of their other studio albums.
What a lovely idea for a thread.

Rusty. The perfect is the enemy of the good.

Never going to get a single consensus on this one
RHCP is good, Led Zep will be in the top 10 for sure, but Metallica / Pearl Jam / U2 / Hendrix / ... arrgh the list just goes on

Abbey Road, The Beatles, released September 26, 1969.
That's a personal opinion anyway. Worldwide opinion I suspect goes with the Eagles: Their Greatest Hits album from 1976 (?). For the audiophiles, probably Roy Orbison and co in Black and White Night, 1987, which is just awesome listening in SACD.

my choice
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique 1989
When hip hop was young enough to not be commercialised and you could cut and paste just about anything together to make a song, funk, jazz, rock, reggae and even a touch of Bob DylanPeople make mistakes...

I'm not sure if this really qualifies as an "album", but Martha Argerich playing J.S. Bach's English Suite (on Deutsche Grammophon), or perhaps Martha again, with the Rach 3, under Karajan, or...
Hmm, so much depends on context, mood, etc
Maybe the Led Zeppelin album with "The Hangman's Tale"?, or Enya's first solo Album?
No answer, because none is possible

Off on as hijack...
Local radio station is running a TOP 1000 Countdown
Get listeners to vote for their favourite 10 songs, then add up the 100,000 votes and make up a top 1000 songs.
At least we have 2 weeks of no repeats, but the 2nd week will be a lot better than the first one
Think they got to number 940 today....

A couple of caveats first
- I don't have a single favourite album
- Assuming that compilations, greatest hits collections and "Best Ofs" are excluded;
Here are some to think about
Money For Nothing - Dire Straits
Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys
Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles
Back To The Roots - John Mayall (And Some Memorable Men)
Madman Across The Water - Elton John (best thing he ever did)Driver of the Forums
Lord of the Manor of Upper Legover
