Furniture/Boat Building Apprenticeship Wanted - Will Volunteer - Melbourne Area
Hey Guys,
My name is Jonathon Robert, I am 24 and looking for a Furniture/boat making or similar fine woodworking work/apprenticeship. Being 24 makes this process pretty hard. I have called and emailed a lot of people and nothing has come up after nearly 6 months of applying and searching. I am more then willing to volunteer as much time as needed or take on general labour to see if I am the right fit for the shop.
Unfortunately in the real world i am already too old for most businesses. Being older and having experience in the workforce means I know what its like to work full time, to be frugal, on time and the willingness to learn. Issues which I know businesses struggle when dealing with younger apprentices.
I do have a business degree and a banking/finance background, however growing up as a country kid (Young, NSW) I have also worked in labour and other hands on industries. In my spare time I like to build instruments from various odds and ends. I also enjoy sports, gardening and video-games in my spare time.
If anybody has or knows of any positions it would be great if you could post here or contact me. I am even happy just to hang out and help out in anybody's shed for experience. I am Located in Preston, Melbourne but more then willing to travel anywhere within an hour's travel.
Cheers.
Jono Robert

Jono, not sure if youve already heard, but Anton Gerner advertised for an apprentice a week or two ago. Might be worth a quick call....

Hey mate,
Yeah I put in a application to those guys as soon as it popped up! Their work is amazing and I would love to work in such a positive and great environment.
They are how ever going through a employment agency that wont return my calls or emails on the application process. I have posted on the respective Facebook and twitter pages as well. I respect that employers use these services so they do not get flooded with phone calls and emails about the job.
Guess all I can do is wait and cross my fingers!
Cheers for the reply Joez.

Update
So after a few months of looking i decided to go out and go on my own with the partner in crime (and student allowance) backing me.
I am currently doing a post grad diploma in Industrial Design, and currently work out of a small workshop in Thornbury Melbourne.
You can check out my stuff at Jonathon Robert
I am still currently looking for any type of part time work to pay the bills and rent whilst i work up my portfolio.
I have read so many books and watched so many DVD's that i am learning slowly but ultimately i still think an apprenticeship would be way to learn without the trial and error of working things out yourself ( which can be a lot of fun but very costly ).
Cheers.
Jono
